Let Us Lament Our Impotence, or Prick Their Conscience

Zouheir Kseibati     Al-Hayat      - 03/08/06//

Who can bring back our martyrs? The rate of killing and madness increases every day. But we should be patient and listen to the president of the world's superpower apathetically consoling us with a smile, as if our martyrs were just heroes in a movie. Let us listen to Blair calling on us to sympathize with Israel, while the dead bodies of the children in Qana are not yet buried.
Let us listen to the spiritual leader of the Iranian Revolution calling on us to resist 'the Zionist wolf' and 'the great Satan' with, as usual, the blood of our people. In any case, it does not matter! The revolution is still there, while here, in Lebanon, we count our martyrs and make a bold stand. It is time for the air raids, after the barbarians have given their warning.
For years, they have gone to extremes in killing us. Our blood is cheap, and the fire of rifles, guns, warships and aircrafts pound us under the aegis of Resolution 1559. We have nothing to do but to believe!
Disarming the militias means killing Lebanon's children and old men and undermining everything that was built on the ruins of civil wars. We have nothing to do but wait for the major powers to agree to settle the score of what remains of their conflicts, while they deceive us, sometimes in the name of freedom and, at other times, under the pretext of the war on 'terror', which they have made the sword of Damocles, hanging over the Lebanese as it does over the Palestinians.
More caravans of martyrs. And Blair calls on us to sympathize with Israel on the grounds that it is a 'victim' of our values. He asks us to justify its war on our values, as if we were the torturer, and because the second massacre in Qana did not arouse his emotions that are overflowing with freedom and democracy. These two are pounding our world with an iron fist.

Lest we are accused of cowardice and defeatism, let us listen to the words of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He may make up for our martyrs, who showed outstanding heroism in Qana, Nabatiyah, Bint Jbeil, Beirut, Baalbek and Akar. He may make up for the martyrs in the North, stricken by the enemy and others, and for the factories, whose cold steel has melted under the hot blast of the raids. There are no slogans chanted, only the suburbs buried under the rubble of treachery.

"This is unacceptable," said President George W. Bush, referring to the slaughter of the young children of Qana, as if he was talking about a hair style. There is still time for more killing and bloodshed; still time for a settlement with predetermined priorities.

Let us count the martyrs; and by counting those who lost their lives we may know how many died with a conscience. The White House is active behind the veils of death and is making "diplomatic progress behind the scenes."

In order to assure those who will survive the massive massacre in Lebanon, Blair promises them an escape from "the crisis" that will serve "the question of moderation in the Middle East on the long term."

The bodies of martyrs lie in black coffins. The British Prime Minister has marked these coffins with the emblem of extremism. We cry. It is time to cry, when we begin to feel totally incapable of protecting children. Time to cry when it there is a major intrigue, plotted against a small country, but one that is large enough to contain every martyr.

Until the super States agree on a settlement, it is not a great issue to count coffins, collect data, and hope for survival, having gone beyond the fallacies and the massacres overwhelmed by gunpowder and corpses.

All the crimes committed by the arrogant executioner before or beyond the North Litani are a mere "lesson to learn". The time has not yet come to stop the massacre. Let us either cry for our impotence or prick their consciences; it will make no difference, anyway.
