Ayoon wa Azan (Major Shame)

Jihad Al Khazen     Al-Hayat     2005/01/19

The largest topic that was accumulated on my desk last week was not about the crimes of the occupation in Palestine, or the terrorist crimes in Iraq, but rather about a costume party.

Prince Harry, the son of the British heir, wore the costume of a Nazi soldier at a private costume party, and the world went crazy, as if the young Prince had killed a priest, while all he had done was to uncover his ignorance; as he is 20 years old, seems to have little knowledge about the history of Europe, as well as incapable of understanding the susceptibility caused by the Nazi Holocaust.

Throughout last week, each and every London newspaper published reports of several pages about that Nazi costume; on January 14 for example, the first 13 pages of The Daily Mail were dedicated to this issue, as the newspaper published an in-depth coverage which bores the reader, even if he was himself a victim of Nazism.

Last Sunday, a week after the incident, the topic still dominated all newspapers, and was on the front page of the moderate and well-established The Independent, which accused Prince Harry's circle of friends of being racist, rather than ignorant.

I randomly chose some of the many articles:

-The Daily Telegraph published two pages with photos, about similar royal errors which occurred in history, and The Sunday Telegraph also published two complete pages on the same issue.

-The Sunday Times published two pages with photos, entitled Harry: the Son in the Bubble, along with his picture wearing the Nazi costume, a picture of his girlfriend Chelsea, in addition to a news item about the German origins of the British Royal Family.

-The Sunday Mirror called Harry 'empty headed,' and said that a poll showed that 71% of people condemned his act.

-The Independent published articles about the issue throughout the week, one of which was entitled the rise of international criticism against the stupid and insensitive prince.

-The Guardian also published articles on the topic throughout last week, some of which were on the front page, of the type: the world and the father condemn the mistake of the prince.

This is a mistake, an indecency, and misguidance, which uncover the ignorance of the young prince, no more, no less; thus, does it deserve all this ongoing mess?

I am not defending Harry, and I strongly condemn the Nazi and Holocaust apologists, as the Holocaust was a massive crime which killed 6 million Jews, and must remain in the conscience of the whole world, in order not to be repeated.

From this standpoint, I condemn the rightist politician Jean-Marie Le Pen, who delivered a bizarre statement as last week, which stated that the Nazi occupation of France was not 'inhumane,' and that France must learn its true history.

Le Pen is 76 years old, and heads the National Front Party, which is as extremist as he is; I think that his statement should qualify him to appear in a court and be accused of anti-Semitism, especially since his speech coincided with the preparation for the 60th memorial of Auschwitz.

I admit that the aforementioned was only an introduction which started at the same time with the news about preparing for the commemoration of the victims of the horrible Nazi camps; however, I noticed that each time the crimes of the Israeli government against the Palestinians increased, talk about the Nazi crimes against the Jews also increased.

There are some good reasons in reminding about what happened in Auschwitz; and the victims of that camp or their descendents deserve to be remembered by the world 60 years after that crime.

However, there are some Ariel Sharon government apologists, as well as the extremist Likudniks who exploit crimes that took place 60 years ago in order to cover-up for crimes that are being carried out today. Israel killed or injured 20 Palestinian civilians in the past three days; a week earlier, it killed seven children from the same family. And prior to that, was the incident of the Israeli captain who emptied the bullets of his gun in the body of a small wounded girl.

Today, some people organize visits to Auschwitz, and some are inviting Prince Harry to visit the camp, in order to see with own eyes the crimes that were perpetrated there. This would be fair when the enemies of Nazism would visit the Palestinian territories in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, in order to see how tough it is to live under the occupation of a criminal who assassinates women and children.

During the weekend, I was reading about the 60th memorial of Auschwitz, the Nazi costume that Prince Harry wore, and then I read purely British investigations about the misery of life under the occupation. Also, Lauren Booth, the sister of Tony Blair's wife Cherrie Booth, wrote a moving article lately about the West Bank, which included a picture of her with some children, with a caption saying: "which one of these would become a doctor, and which one would become a suicide bomber?" Lauren Booth wrote with emotions about the harsh choices that the Palestinians are faced with under the occupation.

As for Rachel Cook, she wrote a similar article in The Observer, in which she talked about the obstacles of the everyday life under the occupation.

I wish for Prince Harry and for all people to visit Auschwitz, and then visit the Palestinian territories, in order to see the new Nazi crimes that are being carried out by the occupation on a daily basis.

Ariel Sharon is the son of Adolph Hitler, and all those who take his defensive are his partners in crime; he is presenting the adequate situation everyday, in order to push all Palestinians to become suicide bombers, and then he closes down the Palestinian territories and sets the army free following a suicide operation he is responsible for, even before it is perpetrated. If the behavior of Prince Harry is shameful, then the biggest disgrace is that the world (especially the Nazi victims) remains silent, in the face of crimes that are being perpetrated on a daily basis, and remembers instead crimes that were perpetrated 60 years ago.
